Coconut shell activated carbon is a highly porous substance derived from coconut shells that has been processed to create an extensive network of internal pores and a large surface area per unit volume. This material is commonly used in various industrial, commercial, and environmental applications due to its exceptional adsorption properties.
The production process begins with coconut shells, which are a natural byproduct of the coconut industry. These shells are first cleaned and then subjected to a process called carbonization, where they are heated in the absence of oxygen to remove volatile compounds and leave behind a high-carbon residue. This carbonized material is then activated through physical methods.
Physical activation involves exposing the carbonized coconut shells to high temperatures in the presence of steam or carbon dioxide. This process causes the development of a vast network of pores of varying sizes within the material, increasing its surface area and adsorption capacity.
The resulting coconut shell activated carbon typically has a dark, granular appearance and is characterized by its high surface area, micro porous structure, and excellent adsorption properties.
